If You Like This Blog Entry...

Here's a little Christmas present before the end of the year... You might have noticed a new little feature pop up on our event pages yesterday, tucked under the list of attendees -- suggested events based on the interests of everyone going.

For us, this has been a quirky way of discovering new events. How 'bout some examples?

People seeing My Morning Jacket in San Diego are also interested in the upcoming Cold War Kids, Of Montreal, Deerhoof, and Snow Patrol shows. If you're going to the SXSW Music conference next March in Austin, Upcoming suggests SXSW Interactive, SXSW Film, and several related parties that week. BookExpo attendees in NYC are also interested in seeing David Lynch speak at Barnes & Noble. Fun!

The more people going, the better the recommendations... So if they seem a little funny at first, check back later as more people find the event. Serendipity tastes good.

How many users have to be attending/watching an event before this shows up? (None of my events are showing any suggested events - but my events peak at about 3 users).

Are you basing the suggestions just on users linked to the events - or are you also factoring in tags and groups in common?

Is greater weight given to events being attended by the same users than events just being watched?

Thanks!

It's mostly based on the social activity of everybody attending a single event, so there isn't a set minimum or maximum. If there are 20 people attending, but none of them have ever attended anything else, there won't be anything to recommend. Other things affect the algorithm too, and we'll toss more things into the mix as we refine it.

(Oh, I did notice that this potluck of yours was suggesting the other two in the monthly series.)
